HAMBURG -- The new Mercedes-Benz S class is 100kg lighter than the model it will replace and its greenest variant will emit less CO2 than a Smart ForTwo. The brand's flagship sedan also has six eyes (cameras) and six ears (radar sensors) that allow it to see and hear enough to drive itself at speeds up to 60kph. "It may sound like Frankenstein, but it's considerably better looking," Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche said during the S-class launch here on Wednesday. Mercedes hopes that the S-class's powertrain, technology and safety upgrades will help it remain the world's top-selling upper-premium sedan, a title Mercedes says the car has had for eight consecutive years. Money-maker The automaker also hopes the S class will help Mercedes meet Zetsche's goal of regaining the No. 1 spot in global luxury cars sales by the end of the decade. BMW passed Mercedes for No. 1 in 2005 and Audi pushed the Stuttgart-based automaker to third place in 2011. Mercedes also trails its rivals financially. While Mercedes achieved an operating margin of 7.1 percent last year, BMW's margin was 10.9 percent and Audi's was 11 percent. In October, Zetsche scrapped mid-term margin targets that were supposed to be achieved in 2013, and last month said his revised full-year guidance from February would also not be met. The disappointing results mean that even more will be expected of the S class, which analysts estimate makes Mercedes double-digit returns on each model sold, although the true figure is a closely guarded secret. "We invested massively in the new S-class ... more Mercedes than an S class isn't possible," Zetsche said. Tech center The S class has traditionally served as the showcase for Mercedes parent Daimler's latest technology, including safety features that the automaker helped pioneer. The S class that debuted in 1978 was the first car in the world to offer ABS, for example. Daimler says that the new S-class's 6-D technology dubbed Intelligent Drive will be standard. The system uses six cameras and six radar sensors and a proprietary algorithm to give the vehicle "eyes and ears" that cover 360 degrees. This helps the car automatically adjust its handling to the street surface and anticipates the direction of movement of other cars as well as cyclists and pedestrians. The new S class goes on sale in Europe starting in July at an after-tax base price of 79,790 euros in Germany. The new-generation S350 BlueTEC diesel will cost about 3,330 euros more than the previous-generation model with the same powertrain. Super-low CO2 While the new and old versions each are powered by a V-6 with 258 hp, the new model's CO2 emissions decrease to a low of 148 grams per kilometer from 164g/km and fuel consumption improves to a top rating of 5.0 liters per 100km from 6.2l/100km. Later, Mercedes will offer even more fuel-efficient versions of the S class. The S300 BlueTec diesel hybrid will consume as little at 4.4l/100km and emit 115g/km of CO2 and the S500 plug-in hybrid will offer fuel consumption of around 3.0l/100km and CO2 emission of less than 75g/km, Mercedes said. By comparison, the two-seat Smart ForTwo diesel's best CO2 result is 86g/km. Said Mercedes randd chief Thomas Weber: "These figures prove that the S class is our most important pacesetter on the road to zero-emissions driving." Six body styles The new S-class, which is the sixth-generation of car, also will take on an even more important role now that it will also replace Daimler's failed Maybach ultra-luxury brand at top of the company's pyramid. Zetsche revealed in November 2011 that the Maybach brand would be discontinued and replaced by new S-class body styles, which are set to grow to six with the new generation from three (the sedan, a long-wheelbase sedan and coupe). A larger and longer S class, widely expected to be called the Pullman, will compete head on with Rolls-Royce and Bentley for the hearts of the super rich. The S class is a critical product launch for a company struggling to make a dent in the lead that rivals BMW and Audi enjoy in sales and profit. "Image-wise the S class is the vehicle that most personifies Mercedes-Benz. If they get it wrong, it could damage the brand and all the vehicles under it," said Christoph Stuermer, research director at IHS Automotive in Frankfurt. "Three generations ago (in 1991) they screwed up the S-class and it nearly put the company on the brink, that's how important a role it plays." Reuters contributed to this report

FRANKFURT -- BMW will invest 3 billion euros through the end of this year on the development of its electric vehicle lineup, funding the "i" subbrand with earnings from its booming business in China, a German business newspaper reported. Handelsblatt said today the sum, which covers 2011 through 2013, is based on calculations it made with the bank Credit Suisse. A BMW spokeswoman told Automotive News Europe that the number was a "little high" and added that she was not sure how the report had arrived at this figure. Citing unofficial sources at the automaker, Handelsblatt estimated that about a third of the BMW Group's 2012 EBIT of 7.6 billion euros were generated by sales in China. The story didn't say how much of BMW Groups 2011 EBIT could be attributed to China. BMW, like other automakers, is developing electric vehicles in a bid to meet stricter emissions rules in the European Union, United States and China. BMW Group's fleet, which includes BMW-, Mini- and Rolls-Royce-brand models, had an average CO2 emissions of 144.8 grams per kilometer in the EU in 2011, according to EU data. It needs to reduce that to 138.4g/km by 2015, at which time the targeted total CO2 fleet average for all cars is 130g/km. The EU is debating new rules that could reduce the total fleet target to 95g/km. Manufacturers hope to be able to offset higher emission vehicles in their fleets through the production of electric cars. BMW plans to launch the first model in its EV lineup, the four seat i3 city car, in the fourth quarter of this year. The company will unveil a production version of the model at the Frankfurt auto show in September. The i3 will be followed by the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car in early 2014. No prices have been announced yet for either model, but the i8's price will exceed 100,000 euros, Ian Robertson, the manufacturer's sales chief, has said. Poor EV sales The i3 will enter a market that has yet to meet industry expectations. In Europe last year Nissan sold 5,210 Leaf EVs, according to figures from JATO Dynamics. That was well below the automaker's target of 9,000 Leaf sales for Europe in 2012. U.S. deliveries of the Leaf failed to reach even half of the 20,000 cars the Japanese manufacturer was targeting last year. BMW, however, is confident of success. Harald Krueger, the carmaker's head of production, has said the group is "charting new territory" with the i3 and i8 models and said he is confident the group will earn money with every BMW i3 sold from the launch on.

WASHINGTON -- Dale Kardos remembers the awkward phone calls he made in 1998, when his client, Rolls-Royce, was having trouble with California's tailpipe standards. The brand's luxury cars were not meeting the state's limits on nonmethane organic gases, or NMOG, which react with sunlight to form California's notorious smog. However, the state's rules were written in such a way that automakers could get off the hook by buying "credits" from car companies that did. So the company had Kardos, a consultant in Washington, call up automakers such as Ford, General Motors and Honda and make a peculiar-sounding request. "I need to buy NMOG credits," Kardos remembers saying. And the person on the other end of the line would say something to the effect of: "You want to do what?" The whole process was "not fun," Kardos says. It took Rolls-Royce two years to get the credits it needed -- the automaker ultimately bought them from Toyota. That was a major frustration for a company that sells a few thousand cars annually worldwide. Kardos, the founder of the one-man startup Mobilis Trading, expects a similar situation to occur often in the coming years as the Obama administration's new fuel economy standards take effect. He thinks he has a way to help: auctions. As reported in Monday's issue of Automotive News , car companies earned 209 million credits before the new corporate average fuel economy standards went into effect, with the largest shares going to Japanese automakers Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. Kardos' startup company would help car companies buy and sell the credits, which have the potential to tilt the competitive balance of the auto industry toward companies that sell more fuel-efficient cars. Experts say companies with large stockpiles of credits, such as Toyota and Honda, could use them to sell thirstier vehicles than would otherwise be allowed or simply save them for a rainy day. But they could also sell credits to rivals. "The scuttlebutt I've heard is that no one really wants to help out a competitor," Phil Gott, a senior director at IHS Automotive, recently told Automotive News. "Then again: If someone gets really desperate and is willing to pay enough money, and someone else is willing to sell, that may change." When fines are not enough In the past, car companies have been able to pay fines for falling short of CAFE standards. From the start of December 1985 to the end of January 2012, automakers such as Jaguar, Porsche and BMW paid $818 million in fines to the federal government for selling high-powered luxury cars, according to the most recent data available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. But under the Obama administration's standards, things get a bit more complicated. NHTSA still will allow car companies to pay fines for flunking CAFE, which will ramp up to 54.5 mpg by the 2025 model year. However, once an exemption for low-volume automakers ends in a couple of years, all car companies will need to satisfy the EPA's limits on carbon dioxide from tailpipes or else buy credits from competitors that do. Full-line automakers may be reluctant to cut deals with rivals, but soon enough the boutique car companies may have no choice but to buy credits, Kardos says. "They didn't comply the past 20 years," he says. "How are they going to comply moving forward, when the standard is going to be twice what it is today, unless they're going to change the product line that they're selling?" Online auctions Mobilis Trading launched an online auction site last summer focused on cars, trucks and transportation fuel. So far, a number of car companies have created accounts, but no auctions have taken place. The concept of credit trading is nothing new. For years, regulators in Washington and Sacramento, Calif., have built it into their programs as a way to cut the cost of complying. But getting credits usually has meant haggling with larger car companies that have credits to spare. Kardos says his service could make the process easier and get automakers a better deal on credits by allowing for open bidding. This is the way the auction site works: First, a company must create an account, signing a legal document that promises to follow through on its bids. Then, a company can auction off its credits or start a "reverse auction," in which an automaker offers to buy credits from whichever company will offer the lowest price. Each auction will include the features used on other online auction sites, such as eBay. That includes a "reserve price," the maximum price that a buyer will accept or the minimum price that a seller will accept. Companies can set a "sell now" price -- a price at which the buyer or seller will agree to end the auction. Automakers can choose when the bidding will begin and end. Kardos hopes his auction site will avoid the problems some other trading systems have encountered. For instance, under renewable fuel mandates that require oil refiners to blend biofuels into gasoline and diesel or buy credits, a few small companies have been caught selling credits for gallons of biofuels that did not exist. In the auto industry, "we're talking about major manufacturers," Kardos says, "except for the fact that we have a couple of very small electric car companies signed up. And you just never know."
