With profits up in all categories of its business during the first quarter, particularly finance and insurance and parts and service, AutoNation Inc. is snapping up more dealerships. AutoNation said first-quarter net income rose 14 percent to $83 million, up from $73 million a year ago. The nation's largest automotive retailer also said today that it will acquire Honda and Hyundai stores in Phoenix and a Toyota store in Dallas with combined annual revenues of $250 million. The acquisition of SanTan Honda Superstore, Hyundai of Tempe and Don Davis Toyota Scion are the second big batch of deals that AutoNation has announced in less than five months. It acquired six dealerships in Texas last December with annual revenues of $575 million. And AutoNation leaders continue to seek new acquisition opportunities. CEO Mike Jackson said the company is in active discussions on other possible deals. "It depends on what becomes available to the marketplace," he said in an interview with Automotive News today. "Does it fit our footprint, is it something we want to acquire and then you have to have fair pricing for all parties. You just have to wait and see." AutoNation COO Michael Maroone said the company has gaps in its desired brand portfolio in all 15 of its markets and looks for acquisitions in all of them. "But certainly our core states of California, Florida and Texas continue to deliver big for us," Maroone said. "We want to make sure we've got our footprint filled out in those markets." Jackson credited AutoNation's first-quarter gains to higher vehicle volumes and improvements in all of its business sectors. He said business will remain strong for the remainder of 2013, driven by accelerated product launches, continued replacement demand and robust availability of consumer credit. "We are at the beginning of a broad-based recovery for the economy and auto retail," Jackson said. AutoNation's first-quarter revenue rose 12 percent to $4.1 billion. The company sold more than 117,000 new and used vehicles during the period, a 9 percent gain. Operating income rose 14 percent to $169.4 million. Increases in all segments Gross profits increased in all four of AutoNation's business segments -- new vehicles, used vehicles, parts and service and finance and insurance. It was led by a 20 percent gain in overall finance-and-insurance gross profits to $155.6 million. On a per-vehicle basis, finance-and-insurance gross profits were $1,322, up 9 percent from the year ago period. Parts-and-service gross profits climbed 9 percent to $272.3 million. New-vehicle gross profits rose 6 percent to $141.7 million. Used-vehicle gross profits rose 6 percent to $86 million. But margins slipped slightly as per-vehicle gross profits dropped about 3 percent in both the new and used vehicle sectors. AutoNation posted a gross profit per new vehicle of $2,110 and a gross profit per used vehicle of $1,651. Rebranding update Jackson told Automotive News that market share is up in the three regions where the company has completed its store rebranding. The share gains, in the AutoNation markets of South Florida, Dallas and Houston, alleviate worries executives had about sales declines that could arise from the rebranding process. The country's largest retailer is dumping its regional dealership names, some of which go back decades, and putting the AutoNation moniker on all mass-market stores and a limited number of luxury-brand stores. The effort started Feb. 1. The share increases, which AutoNation wouldn't specify, are being seen both on a sequential basis and year-over-year. "There's been an increase in advertising, and that always helps," Jackson said. The company remains on track to complete the rebranding campaign in June.
