Tue, 02 Apr 2013 04:37:00 EDT

PARIS (Reuters) -- French car registrations fell 16.4 percent to 165,244 vehicles in March and 14.7 percent to 433,297 overall in the first quarter, according to figures from CCFA, the country's main auto industry body. CCFA on Tuesday also reiterated its full-year outlook, saying it expected 2013 registrations in France to fall by at least 5 percent, and forecast an improvement only in the second half. The March decline also reflected a reduced number of selling days than in the year-earlier period. Adjusted for these calendar effects because of the Easter holiday, French car registrations fell 12.5 percent last month and 12.0 percent in the first quarter. In March alone, PSA/Peugeot Citroen's private car sales fell 23.6 percent in its home market to 45,494 vehicles. Peugeot brand slipped 19.3 percent to 25,920 vehicles and Citroen fell 28.6 percent to 19,574 units last month, Paris-based CCFA said. At smaller domestic rival Renault Group, sales they were down 8.3 percent to 39,416 units in March, helped by a big rise for Dacia. The low-cost brand's sales increased 29.3 percent in March to 6,752 units while sales at Renault brand fell 13.5 percent last month to 32,664 units. Volkswagen Group's French sales fell 19 percent last month to 21,904 while Hyundai Group's volume rose 8.6 percent to 6,367 because of a rising demand for Hyundai brand, which increase March sales 15.8 percent to 3,209. In an analyst note Tuesday Morgan Stanley said that even if sales are adjusted due to fewer working days in March, "this remains a very weak reading," adding that "European demand continues to remain void of any bright spots." The analyst maintained its forecast of 1.64 million sales for France for 2013, down from 1.89 million in 2012. Douglas A. Bolduc contributed to this report

Dacia unions are negotiating a new work agreement at the Renault unit's plant in Pitesti, Romania, after employees resumed work following a spontaneous strike over pay. The strike halted production for a day and a half. A Renault spokeswoman said the strike began on Wednesday morning and ended on Thursday at midday. The stoppage was "spontaneous" and was not planned by the union, she said. Renault did not disclose how much output was lost but said Dacia builds 1,400 cars per day at the factory. Renault denied reports that workers want a 25 percent pay increase. It said there were no specific demands from workers. The spokeswoman did not offer a timeline by when an agreement is expected to be reached. Last year, the monthly salary of Dacia workers at the factory was 3,965 leu (898 euros), Renault said. Dacia spokeswoman Anca Oreviceanu said: "We're negotiating on the collective work agreement. We don't know the impact on production yet." Dacia's low-cost vehicles are selling well in austerity-hit European markets and sales have grown strongly in comparison with Renault's core brand. Last month, Dacia sales in EU and EFTA countries rose 15.4 percent to 20,423, according to industry organization ACEA, while sales of the Renault brand dropped 14.8 percent to 58,423. In the first two months, Dacia has grown deliveries 11.7 percent to 41,043, while Renault sales fell 12.7 percent to 115,289. Dacia sold about 360,000 cars worldwide last year, up 4.8 percent from 2011. Reuters contributed to this report
