<description><![CDATA[HAMBURG -- The new Mercedes-Benz S class is 100kg lighter than the model it will replace and its greenest variant will emit less CO2 than a Smart ForTwo. The brand's flagship sedan also has six eyes (cameras) and six ears (radar sensors) that allow it to see and hear enough to drive itself at speeds up to 60kph. "It may sound like Frankenstein, but it's considerably better looking," Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche said during the S-class launch here on Wednesday. Mercedes hopes that the S-class's powertrain, technology and safety upgrades will help it remain the world's top-selling upper-premium sedan, a title Mercedes says the car has had for eight consecutive years. Money-maker The automaker also hopes the S class will help Mercedes meet Zetsche's goal of regaining the No. 1 spot in global luxury cars sales by the end of the decade. BMW passed Mercedes for No. 1 in 2005 and Audi pushed the Stuttgart-based automaker to third place in 2011. Mercedes also trails its rivals financially. While Mercedes achieved an operating margin of 7.1 percent last year, BMW's margin was 10.9 percent and Audi's was 11 percent. In October, Zetsche scrapped mid-term margin targets that were supposed to be achieved in 2013, and last month said his revised full-year guidance from February would also not be met. The disappointing results mean that even more will be expected of the S class, which analysts estimate makes Mercedes double-digit returns on each model sold, although the true figure is a closely guarded secret. "We invested massively in the new S-class ... more Mercedes than an S class isn't possible," Zetsche said. Tech center The S class has traditionally served as the showcase for Mercedes parent Daimler's latest technology, including safety features that the automaker helped pioneer. The S class that debuted in 1978 was the first car in the world to offer ABS, for example. Daimler says that the new S-class's 6-D technology dubbed Intelligent Drive will be standard. The system uses six cameras and six radar sensors and a proprietary algorithm to give the vehicle "eyes and ears" that cover 360 degrees. This helps the car automatically adjust its handling to the street surface and anticipates the direction of movement of other cars as well as cyclists and pedestrians. The new S class goes on sale in Europe starting in July at an after-tax base price of 79,790 euros in Germany. The new-generation S350 BlueTEC diesel will cost about 3,330 euros more than the previous-generation model with the same powertrain. Super-low CO2 While the new and old versions each are powered by a V-6 with 258 hp, the new model's CO2 emissions decrease to a low of 148 grams per kilometer from 164g/km and fuel consumption improves to a top rating of 5.0 liters per 100km from 6.2l/100km. Later, Mercedes will offer even more fuel-efficient versions of the S class. The S300 BlueTec diesel hybrid will consume as little at 4.4l/100km and emit 115g/km of CO2 and the S500 plug-in hybrid will offer fuel consumption of around 3.0l/100km and CO2 emission of less than 75g/km, Mercedes said. By comparison, the two-seat Smart ForTwo diesel's best CO2 result is 86g/km. Said Mercedes randd chief Thomas Weber: "These figures prove that the S class is our most important pacesetter on the road to zero-emissions driving." Six body styles The new S-class, which is the sixth-generation of car, also will take on an even more important role now that it will also replace Daimler's failed Maybach ultra-luxury brand at top of the company's pyramid. Zetsche revealed in November 2011 that the Maybach brand would be discontinued and replaced by new S-class body styles, which are set to grow to six with the new generation from three (the sedan, a long-wheelbase sedan and coupe). A larger and longer S class, widely expected to be called the Pullman, will compete head on with Rolls-Royce and Bentley for the hearts of the super rich. The S class is a critical product launch for a company struggling to make a dent in the lead that rivals BMW and Audi enjoy in sales and profit. "Image-wise the S class is the vehicle that most personifies Mercedes-Benz. If they get it wrong, it could damage the brand and all the vehicles under it," said Christoph Stuermer, research director at IHS Automotive in Frankfurt. The U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium will coordinate randd and explore more efficient and cost-effective technologies for energy storage in vehicles. The consortium is part of the U.S. Council for Automotive Research, a partnership among Chrysler Group, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors, and is funded in part by Energy Department. The department will contribute $12.5 million annually for five years to fund the initiative, subject to congressional appropriations. Those funds will be matched dollar-for-dollar with private sources, the DOE said in a statement . "By investing in these cutting-edge battery technologies, the Energy Department is helping to cut America's oil imports and provide American families and businesses with more transportation options," the department said. The initiative aims to encourage cooperation among U.S. battery and component manufacturers, universities and national research labs. It also will contribute to the EV Everywhere Grand Challenge, a department program unveiled by President Barack Obama in March 2012 to develop affordable EVs by 2022 . In the past, the EV Everywhere Grand Challenge has spurred initiatives such as the Workplace Charging Challenge, which aims to increase the number of charging stations tenfold within the next five years.]]></description>

Ruesselsheim and Vauxhall's plant in Ellesmere Port, England, had been in the running to gain Zafira production after the 50-year-old Bochum plant in Germany's Ruhr region closes at the end of next year. "This will make Ruesselsheim the site to exclusively build the two largest and most work-intensive Opel model classes -- the Opel flagship Insignia in all its versions and the Zafira Tourer," Opel said today in a statement . On Monday, Automobilwoche , a sister publication of Automotive News Europe , reported that Ruesselsheim or Ellesmere Port were being considered for Zafira production "There are several alternatives to Bochum, and Ruesselsheim and Ellesmere Port are on the short list," an Opel supervistory board member, who did not want to be identified, told Automobilwoche . Ellesmere Port, which builds the Astra compact car, is the best solution financially, but Ruesselsheim, which builds the Astra and the mid-sized Insignia, had a great deal going for it politically, the board member said. The official said detailed studies have been drafted on the factories under consideration, also including the Opel plant in Gliwice, Poland. "Economic aspects mainly work to Ellesmere Port's advantage. But I personally believe that we must keep the Zafira Tourer in Germany because anything else would be difficult to arrange," the board member said. Bochum is the only plant building the Zafira Tourer. Production will cease at the end of 2014, two years before the end of the model's life-cycle, after Bochum's workers voted against measures that would have extended production until the beginning of 2016. The closure will reduce Opel's excess capacity as Europe's car market continues to decline. It is part of GM's strategy to achieve profitability in Europe by 2015. Sales of Zafira minivans in Europe fell 14.6 percent to 10,205 in March, according to data from market researcher JATO Dynamics. <description><![CDATA[RENNES, France -- Peugeot hopes more upscale features and an innovative design will help its 308 hatchback gain market share against the segment leader Volkswagen Golf in the saturated European compact market. Peugeot says the 308 is the latest model that reflects the brand's ambitions to move upmarket by offering innovative driving features for roughly the same price as its predecessor. Peugeot says it has packed the 308 with extra features that the current model does not have without increasing the price. Peugeot says its i-cockpit design, for example, makes the instrument panel simpler and easier to use with fewer knobs and buttons thanks to a 9.7-inch dashboard console and a heads-up display. The 308 shares a small steering wheel design with the 208 subcompact, which Peugeot says offers "intense dynamic sensations." The 308 owes its reduced weight, which is 140 kilograms (308 pounds) lighter than its predecessor, to PSA's new Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2) platform on which PSA will make about half of its cars by 2014. Peugeot said the model's light weight largely accounts for its CO2 emissions of less than 85g/km and improved fuel consumption, which Peugeot has yet to disclose. The 308's length of 4250mm (167 inches) is slightly shorter compared to its 4280mm (168.5 inch)-long predecessor. However, the new 308's sales will be lower than the last generation's volume in Europe, according to IHS Automotive, which forecasts peak sales of 175,000 units for the new model in 2015 in Europe compared to the previous 308's peak of 228,954 units in 2008. "Peugeot's 308 will struggle," Ian Fletcher, an analyst for IHS Automotive, told Automotive News Europe . The 308 will face pressures from a surge in popularity for crossovers and minivans, which are gaining market share in the compact segment, Fletcher said. European sales in the compact market are expected to rise marginally from 2.66 million units in 2013 to 2.85 million units in 2014, before dipping again to 2.84 million units in 2015, according to IHS. The 308 will also struggle to gain share against the VW Golf, which Fletcher said defies the market trends by remaining popular in a shrinking segment, with sales in Europe expected to total 405,000 units in 2013 and 460,062 units in 2014. The 308 is 1460mm (57.5 inches) tall and its trunk space is 470 liters. Peugeot says much attention was paid to create a sexier design compared to its more staid predecessor. The exterior has more contours that are also more pronounced than the previous 308, for example. The brand did not offer details about pricing or engine specifications. Peugeot will build the 308 for European markets at its plant in Sochaux, France. The production model will be unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show on September 10 and will go on sale in Europe in the fourth quarter.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[FRANKFURT -- BMW will invest 3 billion euros through the end of this year on the development of its electric vehicle lineup, funding the "i" subbrand with earnings from its booming business in China, a German business newspaper reported. Handelsblatt said today the sum, which covers 2011 through 2013, is based on calculations it made with the bank Credit Suisse. A BMW spokeswoman told Automotive News Europe that the number was a "little high" and added that she was not sure how the report had arrived at this figure. Citing unofficial sources at the automaker, Handelsblatt estimated that about a third of the BMW Group's 2012 EBIT of 7.6 billion euros were generated by sales in China. The story didn't say how much of BMW Groups 2011 EBIT could be attributed to China. BMW, like other automakers, is developing electric vehicles in a bid to meet stricter emissions rules in the European Union, United States and China. BMW Group's fleet, which includes BMW-, Mini- and Rolls-Royce-brand models, had an average CO2 emissions of 144.8 grams per kilometer in the EU in 2011, according to EU data. It needs to reduce that to 138.4g/km by 2015, at which time the targeted total CO2 fleet average for all cars is 130g/km. The EU is debating new rules that could reduce the total fleet target to 95g/km. Manufacturers hope to be able to offset higher emission vehicles in their fleets through the production of electric cars. BMW plans to launch the first model in its EV lineup, the four seat i3 city car, in the fourth quarter of this year. The company will unveil a production version of the model at the Frankfurt auto show in September. The i3 will be followed by the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car in early 2014. No prices have been announced yet for either model, but the i8's price will exceed 100,000 euros, Ian Robertson, the manufacturer's sales chief, has said. Poor EV sales The i3 will enter a market that has yet to meet industry expectations. In Europe last year Nissan sold 5,210 Leaf EVs, according to figures from JATO Dynamics. That was well below the automaker's target of 9,000 Leaf sales for Europe in 2012. U.S. deliveries of the Leaf failed to reach even half of the 20,000 cars the Japanese manufacturer was targeting last year. BMW, however, is confident of success. Harald Krueger, the carmaker's head of production, has said the group is "charting new territory" with the i3 and i8 models and said he is confident the group will earn money with every BMW i3 sold from the launch on.]]></description>
